A Laguna Beach Fashion Editorial

Against the dark rock formations and open horizon of the Southern California coast, Pacific Winter explores contrast—warm skin against cool water, delicate fabric against weathered stone, and winter texture beneath the California sun.

Photographed in Laguna Beach with model Lili, the editorial moves between two distinct visual chapters. Pale fabrics and a fur-textured hat create a restrained, almost sculptural beginning. Black lace shifts the story into something darker and more intimate without losing its fashion perspective.

The California Coast in Winter Light

The coastline provided more than a background. Its rock formations, reflective water and uninterrupted sky became part of the composition, giving the photographs scale while keeping the wardrobe and model visually isolated.

Rather than disguising the strength of the afternoon sun, the lighting was shaped around it. Warm highlights remain visible across the skin while cooler shadows preserve the blue character of the ocean and surrounding stone. The resulting palette feels distinctly Californian but removed from the familiar language of conventional beach photography.

Shaping the Light

Pacific Winter was photographed on a Hasselblad medium-format system, preserving subtle transitions in skin, fabric and the textured coastal landscape.

Profoto lighting and a Sunbounce reflector were used to control contrast and return light into the face and body. This allowed the natural direction of the sun to remain present while giving the portraits greater dimensionality and consistency.

The objective was not to make the artificial lighting visible. It was to preserve the atmosphere of the location while creating the precision expected from a produced fashion image.

Two Sides of the Same Story

The white chapter is defined by movement, open space and the relationship between fabric and wind. The pale wardrobe separates Lili from the darker formations behind her, while the hat introduces an unexpected winter element into the coastal environment.

As the editorial moves into black lace, the compositions become closer and more graphic. Open skies give way to stone, reclining shapes and stronger lines across the frame. The change in wardrobe shifts the emotional temperature of the series while the location and color treatment keep both chapters connected.

Lili’s performance moves between composure, direct engagement and spontaneous expression. Those changes prevent the sequence from becoming a collection of similar poses and give the final edit a beginning, progression and conclusion.

Built as a Complete Editorial

Pacific Winter reflects Aram Kay’s approach as a Laguna Beach fashion photographer: combining location, wardrobe, controlled lighting and model direction into a unified visual narrative.

The project was created as an editorial study, but its visual language can translate naturally into campaigns and image libraries for fashion, lingerie and resort brands. Each photograph functions independently while remaining part of the larger sequence.
