STAR2 is an editorial portrait series photographed by Aram Kay in San Diego and published in Harper's Bazaar Vietnam. Built around sculptural silhouettes, rich interiors and controlled lighting, the photographs use fashion to support the artist's identity rather than overwhelm it.
The series was developed as a connected editorial rather than a collection of unrelated portraits. Wardrobe, expression, composition and color change throughout the shoot while maintaining a consistent visual language across the finished story.
Building an Editorial Identity
A strong editorial has to remain recognizable even as the wardrobe, framing and expression change. For STAR2, each look was allowed to reveal a different side of the artist while color, composition and atmosphere kept the photographs connected.
Wider compositions establish the environment and styling, while tighter portraits bring attention back to expression and character. The result is a sequence designed to work as a complete publication story while allowing individual photographs to stand independently.
Fashion Meets Artist Portraiture
Fashion plays an important role throughout the editorial, but the clothing never becomes more important than the subject. Tailored silhouettes, bold color and statement pieces create visual impact while expression, posture and restraint keep the photographs centered on STAR2.
That balance places the series between fashion editorial photography and artist portraiture — a useful approach when an image needs both a strong visual identity and a recognizable subject.
