On the Rooftop
Downtown San Diego Fashion Editorial Photography
On the Rooftop is a Downtown San Diego fashion portrait series photographed by Aram Kay with model Madeleine Salgado and published in PROMO Magazine. Created entirely on location, the project uses an elevated rooftop environment to strip away visual distractions and build the photographs around silhouette, architecture and open sky.
Rather than photographing the subject separately from the city, railings, concrete and the geometry of Downtown San Diego become active parts of the compositions. The result is a clean, urban fashion story with a clear sense of place.
Fashion Against the City
The rooftop provided a simple visual vocabulary: strong horizontal and vertical lines, open space and the changing relationship between the model and the skyline. Styling and lighting were kept restrained so posture, silhouette and architecture could carry more of the frame.
This approach keeps the photographs editorial without making them feel overly constructed. The location remains recognizable while the subject and clothing stay visually dominant, creating imagery that can move naturally between fashion portraiture, editorial presentation and an urban lookbook.
From Rooftop Fashion Story to Magazine Publication
The final sequence combines environmental portraits with tighter fashion imagery, allowing the series to work as more than a single rooftop photograph. The visual consistency comes from the limited architectural palette, available light and repeated relationship between the model and the surrounding structure.
Selected images from On the Rooftop were published in PROMO Magazine, giving the project a finished editorial context beyond the original session.
